The extensive weathervane collection in a traveling Folk Art Exhibit at the Phoenix Art Museum absolutely stopped us in our tracks. The size, designs and materials used fascinated us. We enjoyed each weathervane as we analyzed the artistry of these once functional wooden and metal pieces.
A few American weathervanes began appearing in the last quarter of the 17th century. By the mid 19th century factories were proucing a variety of weathervanes in large numbers. There were vanes for sea coast villages: sailors, ships, whales, gulls and various fish. Most churches were not considered complete until a rooster, cock or Gabriel blowing his trumpet was attached to the tallest spire.
We are sharing our collection of original designs inspired by authentic weathervanes with you in this book. Our enthusiasm for weathervanes has been carried into quilts and hooked rugs. - our first love.
